Iris and Ford Basel
In 2009, the GRCC Foundation received a generous gift from the estate of Iris and Ford M. Basel to create a scholarship endowment for nursing and business students. Ford and Iris Basel were long time owners of City Beverages in Kent. Ford Basel had participated in an exercise rehabilitation program at Green River in the early 80's and several of his family members attended the college, including nephew Ford Kiene, first GRCC alumni to serve as President of the Foundation Board. Ford and Iris had previously helped the Foundation with a gift toward the Kennelly Commons, which is signified by the Ford and Iris Basel Garden near the water sculpture. Among the many causes important to Ford and Iris was the Shriners' Hospitals for Children and they understood the need for well-trained medical professionals. The legacy Ford and Iris began in their lifetime will live on through student recipients of the Iris and F.M. Basel Scholarship Endowment at Green River Community College.
